After immigrating to Canada in 1952, he authored numerous cookbooks and collected over 1300 throughout his life. Barber enjoyed his retirement on a farm in British Columbia's Cowichan Valley. He passed away on November 29, 2007, while reading a cookbook, leaving behind a legacy in the culinary world and five children.
