He competed for the University of Georgia and won Southeastern Conference titles in 1976 and 1977. A four-time All American, Barrineau participated in the World University Games and earned second place in the 1976 NCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. He had a notable rivalry with Dwight Stones, who set multiple world records, while Barrineau claimed the Masters World Record in their last matchup.
