Sir James Whyte Black (June 14, 1924 – March 22, 2010) was a Scottish physician and pharmacologist awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988, sharing it with Gertrude Elion and George Hitchings for his research leading to the discovery of propranolol and cimetidine. He held various academic and research positions, establishing the Department of Physiology at the University of Glasgow, where he studied the effects of adrenaline on the human heart. In 1958, he worked at Imperial Chemical Industries, developing propranolol for treating heart ailments and cimetidine for peptic ulcers.
