James Burge (1906–1990) was an English barrister known for his defense of Stephen Ward during the Profumo affair in 1963. He inspired John Mortimer's fictional barrister Horace Rumpole. Burge, educated at Cheltenham College and Cambridge, was called to the Bar in 1932 and served in the RAF during WWII. He became Queen's Counsel in 1965 and was a bencher of the Inner Temple. Burge's dedication to controversial clients defined his career, and he experienced professional challenges after the highly publicized trial of Ward, who died shortly afterward.
