James D. Thornton is an American euphonium player, music educator, and composer born on January 23, 1953, in New Rockford, North Dakota. He started music lessons in his father's band and later played cornet, tuba, and euphonium. From 1974 to 1981, he was a member of the United States Marine Band, performing for four U.S. presidents. He studied at the University of Mary, earning a bachelor's degree in 1986 and a master's degree in 1987. Thornton has taught at various schools and is involved with music education at the International Music Camp.
