He rose through the ranks from lieutenant, participating in significant military operations, including the Second Gulf War and the Iraq War. Thurman commanded the 4th Infantry Division and later the V Corps in Germany. His final command was over the United Nations Command and the United States Forces Korea. He retired on November 22, 2013, after a distinguished military career, which involved extensive leadership roles both in the U.S. and abroad.
