James E. Kyes was an American naval officer born on April 16, 1906, in Everett, Washington. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1930. As the commanding officer of the USS Leary (DD-158), he was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously for extraordinary heroism during a North Atlantic engagement against German submarines in December 1943. When his ship was hit by torpedoes, he ordered the crew to abandon ship, and he sacrificed his life to ensure a young crew member could escape by giving him his life jacket before entering the icy waters of the Atlantic.
