James E. Thornton was a prominent American computer engineer known for his significant contributions to the development of early supercomputers. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1950 and joined Engineering Research Associates. After a stint at Control Data Corporation, where he worked with Seymour Cray on pivotal projects like the CDC 6000 supercomputer, he founded Network Systems Corporation. In recognition of his pioneering work in high-performance processors and vector supercomputers, he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award in 1994.
