James Earl Ray was an American from Illinois who was convicted on April 4, 1968, for the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Upon being charged, he confessed to being guilty to avoid a trial and the possibility of receiving the death penalty. He was sentenced to 99 years in prison; however, he later recanted his confessions and sought a retrial, which was unsuccessful. Ray died in prison from hepatitis C.
