James Frazier, Jr. was an influential American conductor and composer, born on May 9, 1940, in Detroit. He gained recognition as one of the first African American conductors with an international reputation. Starting music at a young age and studying at prestigious institutions, he made his debut with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at 24. Frazier founded the National Afro-American Philharmonic Orchestra in 1978 and is noted for his works, including 'King Requiem' and a musical about the 1967 Detroit riots. He passed away on March 10, 1985, in New York.
