Hardy (May 14, 1918 – February 19, 2003) was an American surgeon best known for performing the first lung transplant in history on June 11, 1963, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He collaborated with Turkish physician Fikri Alican during this groundbreaking procedure, although the patient died 18 days later. Hardy is also recognized for being the first person to conduct a complete heart transplant and for transplanting a chimpanzee heart into a dying man on January 23, 1964, although this heart only functioned for one hour before the patient passed away.
