James Stratton Holmes was a Dutch-American poet, translator, and translation scholar, born on May 2, 1924, in Collins, United States, and passed away on November 6, 1986, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He sometimes published under his real name James S. Holmes and at other times used pen names such as Jim Holmes and Jacob Lolland. In 1956, he became the first non-Dutch translator to receive the prestigious Martinus Nijhoff Award, the most important prize awarded to translators of creative texts from or to the Dutch language.
