James Benson 'Jim' Irwin was an American astronaut, aerospace engineer, test pilot, and U.S. Air Force officer born on March 17, 1930. He was selected as part of Astronaut Group 5 and served as the lunar module pilot for Apollo 15, which conducted the fourth moon landing. Irwin became the eighth person to walk on the moon and was the first of the twelve men who have done so to pass away, dying in 1991 after suffering a series of heart attacks, primarily attributed to exertion during physical activities.
