James Joseph Clauss, born on September 1, 1953, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is an American classicist specializing in Hellenistic literature. He earned his B.A. in 1974 from the University of Scranton, followed by an M.A. in 1976 from Fordham University, and a Ph.D. in 1983 from the University of California, Berkeley, with a dissertation on Apollonius Rhodius. He has been a professor at the University of Washington since 1997 and has also taught in the fields of Near Eastern Languages and Comparative Literature. His research focuses on Hellenistic literature and aspects of Roman literature.
