James M. Simmons, often called Jimmy Simmons or Dr. Simmons, is a noted educational administrator and musician. He served as the 10th president of Lamar University, resigning in 2013 to return as a music instructor. Simmons is honored with the title of President Emeritus and the James M. 'Jimmy' Simmons Music Building. He earned multiple awards, including Newsmaker of the Decade in 2011, and acknowledges service contributions through recognized honors. In 2014, he became board president of the Beaumont Independent School District at the request of the Texas Education Commissioner.
