James McDivitt is a retired American test pilot, Air Force officer, aerospace engineer, and NASA astronaut who flew on both the Gemini and Apollo programs. He commanded Gemini 4, during which Edward White became the first American to walk in space. McDivitt was also the commander of Apollo 9, the first fully crewed flight, and conducted the first test flight with the Apollo lunar module. He later oversaw lunar landing operations and served as the Apollo program director from 1969 to 1972.
