James Miyaji was an American martial arts master, Hanshi, and holder of the 10th Dan in Karate and Kobudo. Born on June 17, 1928, in Honolulu, Hawaii, he began studying Judo at the age of 21. In 1957, he started training under Richard Kim, the founder of Shorinji Ryu, and became one of his closest students. He also studied Goju Ryu and Shito Ryu. Miyaji was a founding member of the Hawaii Karate Congress and Hawaii Karate Kodanshakai, as well as a representative of the Dai Nippon Butokukai in Hawaii.
