James Michael Moran is an American astrophysicist born on January 3, 1943, in Plainfield, New Jersey. He studied at the University of Notre Dame and MIT, earning his Ph.D. in 1968. He worked at Lincoln Laboratory until 1970 and has been at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics since then. He became a lecturer in 1973 and a professor at Harvard University in 1979, while also taking a professorship at Nanjing University in China in 2005. He is a member of several prestigious academies.
