He studied at the University of Cambridge and the University of Michigan, earning prestigious degrees and awards. Goodier held academic positions at several institutions, most notably at Cornell University and Stanford University. He was an accomplished educator, receiving the George Westinghouse Award for Engineering Education. His research interests included elastic stability, thermally induced stresses, and fracture mechanics. He was also a musician with a broad range of interests including literature and philosophy.
