James P. Eisenstein is a prominent American solid-state physicist, known for his research on two-dimensional electron systems in semiconductor heterostructures and graphene. He earned his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1974 and completed his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in 1980. Following a brief tenure as an Assistant Professor at Williams College, he joined Bell Laboratories in 1983 and became a Professor at Caltech in 1996. His work includes discoveries of new phases in two-dimensional systems and the fractional quantum Hall effect.
