James R. Dow is a Professor Emeritus of German at Iowa State University, focusing on German folklore, particularly the Old Order Amish and Amana Colonists. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1966 and previously taught at the University of Wyoming. Dow served as editor of the Internationale Volkskundliche Bibliographie for a decade and was a guest professor in Bremen, Germany. In 2005, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his work on the Cimbrian language, leading to a notable publication edited by Bruno Schweizer.
