James Samuel Thomas was an influential American bishop in The Methodist Church, later known as The United Methodist Church. Born on April 8, 1919, he became one of the youngest bishops when elected in 1964. Notably, he was the first black bishop of the North Central Jurisdiction, serving in Iowa until 1976, before leading the East Ohio Conference until his retirement in 1988. He authored 'Methodism's Racial Dilemma' and received recognition from the Iowa Senate for his civil rights advocacy.
