James Nathaniel Simpkins was a talented cartoonist and artist born in Winnipeg on November 26, 1910. He worked for the National Film Board of Canada for many years before transitioning to a successful career as a freelancer. Simpkins is well-known for creating the cartoon character Jasper the Bear, which gained renown throughout Canada from 1948 to 1972 and is still recognized today as the mascot of Jasper National Park. He passed away on February 1, 2004.
