James Thain was a British aviator and former Royal Air Force officer, known for piloting BEA Flight 609 which crashed in the 1958 Munich air disaster. Thain began his career as a sergeant in the RAF, eventually becoming a flight lieutenant. After the crash, which killed 23 people, he faced blame for the accident despite evidence to the contrary. Dismissed from BEA, he spent years trying to clear his name before retiring to a poultry farm. Thain died of a heart attack at 54 years old.
