James W. Holsinger Jr. (born May 11, 1939) is an American physician and former U.S. Army Reserve general who has worked in public health for over 30 years. He served as the Under Secretary for Health for Veterans Affairs from 1990 to 1993 under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Holsinger was controversially nominated by President George W. Bush as U.S. Surgeon General in 2007 but was not voted on due to allegations of anti-gay bias. He has also held academic positions and leadership roles in the United Methodist Church.
