As a detective with the NYPD's Manhattan South Homicide Task Force, he was among the first responders at Ground Zero, aiding in rescue efforts and evacuation. Shortly after, he developed severe respiratory issues linked to his work at the site. He passed away from a lung disease on January 5, 2006. His death sparked debate regarding the consequences of 9/11, leading to posthumous recognition of his sacrifices.
