Jan Backus is a retired American politician and community activist. She served as a Vermont state senator from 1989 to 1994 and 1997 to 2000, representing Windham and Chittenden Counties. Backus was chairwoman of the Senate Health & Welfare Committee and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. A moderate-to-liberal Democrat, she ran for U.S. Senate in 1994 and 2000, and for lieutenant governor in 2004. Currently, she is involved in Winooski's Downtown Revitalization Project and competes annually in the National Crossword Championship.
