Jan Otto Marius Broek (1904-1974) was a Dutch social geographer born in Utrecht. He studied social geography under Louis van Vuuren and became associated with the Association of Utrecht Geography Students. After obtaining a Fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation, he conducted research in California, leading to his 1932 dissertation on the Santa Clara Valley, influenced by Carl Ortwin Sauer. In 1946, he succeeded Van Vuuren at Utrecht but later moved to Minnesota in 1948. Broek published extensively in cultural and historical geography, co-authoring 'A Geography of Mankind' in 1968.
