Jan de Smedt was a Belgian painter and sculptor born in Mechelen on February 7, 1905. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and gained recognition as a versatile artist. Notably, his work inspired Anton van Wilderode to write a poem. In 2005, to celebrate the centenary of his birth, a square was named after him in Mechelen, a bronze statue was unveiled, and an exhibition was held. A book about his life and work co-authored by his son was also published that year.
