Jan Vaumund Garwick (31 July 1916 - 18 June 1989) was a Norwegian mathematician and computer scientist known as the 'father of computer science in Norway.' After earning his degree in mathematics from the University of Oslo in 1938, he worked on astrophysical problems and contributed to the early development of computing in Norway. He led the Norwegian Data Association and was pivotal in creating high-level programming languages like SIMULA and GPL. Garwick had significant involvement in NATO-related defense research and emigrated to the USA in 1967, furthering his career in California and New Mexico.
