Jan M. Gybels was a Belgian neurosurgeon and professor of neurology at the Catholic University of Leuven. He was a world authority on pain and a pioneer in stereotactic surgery and deep brain stimulation. Obtaining his PhD in 1955, he worked at McGill University's Montreal Neurological Institute in the early 1960s before establishing a neurophysiology lab upon his return to Leuven. Gybels published around 350 scientific articles on pain and served as a member and president of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium. He passed away in 2011 during a family dinner.
