Jan Józef Szczepański was a Polish writer born on January 12, 1919, in Warsaw, and he passed away on February 20, 2003, in Kraków. He served as the chairman of the Association of Polish Literati, which was dissolved during martial law in Poland. Szczepański participated in the Round Table negotiations that led to Poland's democratic transition in 1989. After these negotiations, he became the chairman of the reestablished Association of Polish Writers and served as its honorary chairman until his death. He authored novels, essays, screenplays, and also worked as a translator.
