Jan Kooistra is a Frisian poet born on February 15, 1959, in Wâlterswâld. He resides in Anloo after growing up in Wâlterswâld. Kooistra trained as a teacher and later studied Dutch. He gained recognition in 1980 with his poem 'Himpen yn de simmerreen' at an event celebrating Frisian poetry. His debut was in the literary magazine Hjir, and since 2018 he has been part of the Frisian poets' collective Rixt. His poetry, originally in Wâldfrysk, later transitioned to standard Frisian, exploring themes of love, longing, and humanity, often intertwined with nature.
