Jan Leendert Plesman was a Dutch pilot and member of the 'Englandvaarders', who were individuals that made dangerous journeys to escape Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II. Born on December 18, 1919, in Gouda, he served as an officer in the Royal Netherlands Air Force before the war. Plesman studied at the Technical University of Delft from 1937 to 1940 and later underwent flight training at the airbase De Vlijt on Texel Island. He was referred to as 'The Flying Dutchman' and was the second of four children in his family.
