Jan Østby (1902–1986) was a Norwegian teacher and children's book author from Tjølling in Larvik. He was educated at Hamar lærerskole and worked as a teacher in Stokke and Sandar before becoming a school inspector in Tjølling in 1956. Østby debuted in 1935 with 'Gutter på hvalfangst' and wrote several novels and documentary books about whaling, shipping, and polar exploration. He was a co-founder, vice-chairman, and honorary member of the Youth Literature Association.
