Jan Peter Balkenende (born May 7, 1956, in Biezelinge, Zeeland) is a Dutch Christian-democratic politician and member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party. He served as party leader from October 1, 2001, to June 9, 2010, and as Prime Minister of the Netherlands from July 22, 2002, to October 14, 2010. Prior to this, he was a member of the House of Representatives and a professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Since December 1, 2010, he has been a distinguished professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam and a partner at Ernst & Young since April 1, 2011.
