Jan Simoen was a Flemish author of children's books, born on July 22, 1953, in Ostend, Belgium. He studied Romance languages and communication sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven, later teaching French to teenagers. Diagnosed with cancer in 2010, he founded Kanker4Life in February 2012 to show that cancer patients could still contribute positively to society. He passed away at the age of 59. His posthumous work, 'Vandaag gaan we iets plezants doen,' compiles newsletters he shared with friends and family about his illness, with proceeds supporting children in need in Uganda.
