Jan Sokol was a Czech philosopher, dissident, politician, and translator, born on April 18, 1936. He briefly served as the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports in 1998 under Prime Minister Josef Tošovský. From 1990 to 1992, he was a member of Parliament for Prague. He was the first dean of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University in Prague from 2000 to 2007. Sokol was a candidate in the 2003 Czech presidential elections but lost to Václav Klaus.
