Jan Szarek was a Polish Lutheran clergyman and bishop born on February 13, 1936, in Bielsko-Biała, Poland. He served as the bishop of the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland from 1991 to 2001. Additionally, he was the chairman of the Polish Ecumenical Council from 1993 to 2001 and led the Diakonia of the Evangelical Augsburg Church from 2000 to 2005. Szarek passed away on October 8, 2020, in Cieszyn. He was married to Aniela Szarek, an economist and banker, and they had two children.
