Jan Thijssen was a Dutch archaeologist born on April 18, 1943, in Vierlingsbeek. He initially studied biology but later pursued archaeology at the University of Amsterdam. Thijssen worked for the Dutch National Service for Archaeological Heritage and served as city archaeologist in Nijmegen from 1989 to 2006. He was instrumental in many Roman and medieval discoveries and confirmed the continuity of habitation in Nijmegen during the early Middle Ages. Thijssen died on December 2, 2016, in Nijmegen after a period of illness.
