He began his career post-World War II at the Nijmeegs Dagblad and later became a correspondent in Spain for the NRC Handelsblad and NOS. In 1968, he joined GPD and rose to the position of editor-in-chief and director before retiring in 1987. Van Beek remained active in journalism as chairman of Inter Press Service and board member of Free Voice. He was honored as an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau for his contributions. He passed away in January 2011.
