Janaky Athi Nahappan, born on February 25, 1925, was a founding member of the Indian Congress of Malaysia and one of the early women in the struggle for Malaysia's independence. Growing up in a wealthy Tamil family, she was inspired by Subhas Chandra Bose and joined the Indian National Army during the Japanese occupation of Malaysia. After World War II, she became a social activist and helped establish the Indian Congress in Malaya. Nahappan later served as a senator in Malaysia's Dewan Negara and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000. She passed away on May 9, 2014.
