She was educated at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau and the Cincinnati Conservatory. Hobson won the Naumburg Competition for Young Artists in 1945, adopting her grandmother's surname, Hobson, as her stage name. Her notable achievement included participating in the recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by George Szell in 1961. She taught at Marshall University from 1958 to 1983.
