Jane Jacobs (May 4, 1916 - April 25, 2006) was a Canadian-American journalist, author, and activist influential in urban studies, sociology, and economics. In her book 'The Death and Life of Great American Cities' (1961), she argued that urban renewal often disregards the needs of city residents. Jacobs led grassroots efforts against plans to demolish neighborhoods, notably opposing Robert Moses' plans for Greenwich Village. After moving to Toronto in 1968, she continued her activism against the Spadina Expressway project. Despite lacking formal qualifications in urban planning, she became a significant voice in the field.
