Janet Darnell Leach was an American ceramicist born on March 15, 1918, in Grand Saline, Texas. She studied ceramics under Shoji Hamada at Black Mountain in North Carolina and later became his apprentice in Japan, becoming the first foreign woman to study ceramics there. She married British ceramicist Bernard Leach in 1955 and they established a pottery workshop in St. Ives, Cornwall. Her work reflects significant Japanese aesthetic influences and has garnered increasing popularity. A retrospective of her work was held at Tate St Ives in 2006-2007.
