Janet Rau Johnson Mondlane was an influential figure in the liberation of Mozambique from Portuguese colonialism, co-founding FRELIMO with her husband, Eduardo Mondlane. Born in 1935 in Illinois, she met Eduardo in 1951, marrying him in 1956 after both graduated. Together, they relocated to Dar es Salaam in 1963 to organize liberation efforts. Janet directed the non-military branch of FRELIMO, raising funds for education and health initiatives. After Eduardo's assassination in 1969, she held various government positions post-independence and established a foundation in his name, receiving an honorary doctorate in 2011.
