She is notable for being the only high-ranking officer to face punishment in connection with the prisoner abuse scandal at the facility. Karpinski admitted to witnessing a memo signed by former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld that mandated the use of harsh methods with detainees at Abu Ghraib.
