Jan Fredrik "Janken" Varden, born on April 6, 1938, in Oslo, is a prominent Norwegian stage director and theatre educator. A graduate of The University of Oslo's Law School, he has directed for various theatres including Riksteatret and Nationaltheatret. From 1989 to 1996, he led Oslo Nye Teater and chaired the Norwegian National Theatre School (1976-1981). His accolades include being knighted in the Danish Order of the Dannebrog and the Norwegian Order of Saint Olav. He was married to poet Kate Næss until her death in 1987 and later partnered with actress Birgitte Halling-Koch.
