János Major was a Hungarian graphic artist, painter, and photographer born on May 8, 1934, in Budapest. Originally named Janos Neufeld, he belonged to a Jewish family. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, specializing in graphic reproduction, and graduated in 1959 with etchings depicting women workers. Major adopted the surname Major after his mother married Bela Major. He had a brief marriage to Eva Buchmuller, with whom he had two daughters. He passed away on June 12, 2008.
