Janosch, born Horst Eckert on March 11, 1931, is a renowned German children's author and illustrator. Originally from Hindenburg, Silesia, he has mixed German and Polish roots. After World War II, his family relocated to West Germany. He worked in a textile factory before studying at an art academy in Munich, though he eventually left his studies. He began his career as a freelance artist and published his first children's book in 1960 with the encouragement of his friend George Lentz, adopting the pen name Janosch.
